Jehovah: Defender of Women, Sustainer of Justice

(sarcasm alert)

Good news! I've just discovered a law from God that could help me find a wife.

If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, he shall pay the girl's father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the girl, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives (Deut. 22:28-29).
I'm not exactly sure of the modern equivalent to 50 shekels, but it can't be that much considering the fine for giving a virgin a bad name is 100 shekels (Deut. 22:19). So lets see here:

Rape = 50 shekels (with the rapist marrying the victim)
Slander = 100 shekels
and of course, cursing your parents = death.

This all seems a little unfair (and evil), but hey, whose to question God. Should I obey a law given by the infinitely wise Creator of the universe, albeit a little dated, or some crazy human laws from the 21st century? I mean, what kind of just and holy God would imprison a man for rape or allow gays and lesbians to marry? That's just sick.

Who says it's a law from God?
The Bible records a lot of MAN's stupiedity.
It's certainly NOT one of GOD's commandments.
It MOST certainly violates the Ten Commandments.

I know it's overkill (I was kinda bored) but the following is a list of passages reinforcing the fact that the laws in Deuteronomy are in fact from God through Moses (so the book claims).

These are the words Moses spoke to all Israel in the desert east of the Jordan... Moses proclaimed to the Israelites all that the LORD had commanded him concerning them. (Deuteronomy 1:1-3)

1 Hear now, O Israel, the decrees and laws I am about to teach you. Follow them so that you may live and may go in and take possession of the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you. 2 Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the LORD your God that I give you. (Deuteronomy 4:1-2)

5 See, I have taught you decrees and laws as the LORD my God commanded me, so that you may follow them in the land you are entering to take possession of it. 6 Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding to the nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say, "Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people." [now that I find hilarious] (Deuteronomy 4:5-6)

1 These are the commands, decrees and laws the LORD your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess (Deut. 6:1)

6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates (Deuteronomy 6:6-8).

11 Therefore, take care to follow the commands, decrees and laws I give you today (Deut. 7:11).

12 And now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you but... to observe the LORD's commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good? (Deut. 10:12-13)

16 The LORD your God commands you this day to follow these decrees and laws; carefully observe them with all your heart and with all your soul. (Deut.26:16).

1 Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people: "Keep all these commands that I give you today. 2 When you have crossed the Jordan into the land the LORD your God is giving you, set up some large stones and coat them with plaster. 3 Write on them all the words of this law when you have crossed over to enter the land the LORD your God is giving you (Deut. 27:1-3).

1 If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. (Deut. 28:1)

58 If you do not carefully follow all the words of this law, which are written in this book, and do not revere this glorious and awesome nameā€”the LORD your God- 59 the LORD will send fearful plagues on you and your descendants, harsh and prolonged disasters, and severe and lingering illnesses (Deut. 28:58-59).

5 The LORD will deliver them to you, and you must do to them all that I [Moses] have commanded you [in chapter 20]. (Deut. 31:5)

So Moses wrote down this law and gave it to the priests, the sons of Levi, who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and to all the elders of Israel. (Deut. 31:9)

24 After Moses finished writing in a book the words of this law from beginning to end, 25 he gave this command to the Levites who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD : 26 "Take this Book of the Law and place it beside the ark of the covenant... (Deut. 31:24-26).

Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. (Joshua 1:7)

Jesus also said that in the laws of Moses, divorce was allowed, but only because of the hardness of their hearts. It was not part of God's divine plan.

Maybe I'll say as well that even if these laws were not a part of God's divine plan (not a part of his original plan) the fact still remains that he did command them.

It's also interesting that Moses commanded these laws be placed next to the ark of the covenant. This is the same ark that was so ultra holy that people died when they touched it. Yet these ugly laws took a place of honor beside it.
